April was all about building momentum. With the club’s backing, we invested in three key bits of machinery that will make a real difference: a Verti-Drain, Speed Brush, and Bernhards grinders.
These tools give us far more control over surface quality, thatch management, and mower sharpness — all critical to improving turf health and playability, these items will be due to arrive around June.
The Speed Brush will allow us to brush in topdressing material far more efficiently and evenly, helping to maintain smooth, true surfaces and prevent sand build-up in low areas. It will also be useful for lifting the turf canopy before mowing, improving cut quality and overall presentation.
The Verti-Drain will enable us to relieve deep compaction, improve root development, and increase oxygen exchange within the soil profile — all without excessive surface disruption. It can also be used across all areas of the golf course that have previously lacked regular cultural work, allowing us to steadily improve soil structure and drainage throughout the site.
The Bernhards grinders will ensure our cutting units stay in top condition, providing a consistently clean and precise cut that reduces plant stress and promotes healthier turf. Being a links course, our mowers frequently operate in sandy conditions, which is highly abrasive to blades — so maintaining sharp units will be especially important for both turf quality and machinery longevity.
